T.G. Shevchenko City Park

Shevchenko Garden, then called by University, was founded in the early 19th century by Vasily Karazin, founder of Kharkiv University. Previously there existed a luxurious natural oak grove, and after the breakdown of the garden formed two zones – the landscaped park on the upper terrace, and a botanical garden on the bottom. In the 30th years of the 20th century there has been reconstruction, and after the installation of the monument to Taras Shevchenko in 1935 the park was renamed in his honor. In 20 years between the terraces of the park was built by cascading staircase with fountains and a viewing platform, which today is called the Cascade – a popular place in Kharkiv, it overlooks the southern part of the city.
The park has few monuments, including mentioned monument to Taras Shevchenko and Vasily Karazin monument, memorial to a soccer ball, a monument to repressed Kobzars, a monument to Archangel Michael and a monument to 50 parallel. Next to the last located The Avenue of Stars, where the world cinema stars, who come to the festival of Kharkovskaia Siren, had left their handprints. Among them are handprints of Pierre Richard and Jean-Paul Belmondo.
In park is located concert hall “Ukraine”, Lysenko Theatre of Opera and Ballet, as well as a large fountain, enjoy the cool summer evenings, which comes to many people.
