Monument to Gogol

A memorial bust of “the great Ukrainian poet” and writer Nikolai Gogol was conceived before its “brother”, a bust of the poet Pushkin, in 1881, when in the city was organized a charity show to raise funds for the bust installation. What happened to collected money is unclear, but monument appeared in the park for almost 20 years later – in 1909. During the Second World War bust was hit by bullet that made a hole in the hand and arm of the poet – thay were not close up, and remained there to this day.
