Kharkov Academic Opera and Ballet – one of the oldest local musical theatre that inherits the best traditions of Ukrainian, Russian and world culture. Its history started since 1780, when the first musical play was given, its further rise is associated with the appearing of opera enterprises and tours of private troupes, including Italian. Opera and ballet divertissements were given in various places not always suitable for this purpose. New point in history is December 1874 when due to the efforts of philanthropist V.Paschenko in a new built theater first performance of F.Berger’s enterprise was played. In the year of 1891 the theater received a permanent residence in the former Commercial Club on Rymarskaia Street, where he worked with a breaks for 100 years, and now there’s a residence of Kharkiv Philharmonic Orchestra. The new theatre was built in record long time – from 1970 to 1991. Now in season here are happening over two hundred performances of opera and ballet, musical evenings, concerts, performances and – Opera and Ballet is definitely the most visited cultural institution of Kharkov.
