The first artifacts of the future collection of the Kharkiv Art Museum appeared in the city because the famous scientist and philanthropist, founder of Kharkiv University, Vasilii Karazin -he bought 2477 graphic works by Albrecht Durer and Francois Boucher for the university. It happened in 1805, and nearly a hundred years later here was founded Kharkov City Museum of Art and Industry that worked successfully until 1935. Then collections were combined to create a Ukrainian art gallery, funds of which totaled 75,000 items. Unfortunately, to this day hadn’t reached even the tenth part of the samples of art.
However, at present the museum’s collection is large enough for its territory – has more than 20,000 exhibits. The museum contains original works of the masters of world and Ukrainian art – Ilya Repin, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, Ivan Aivazovsky, as well as drawings, sculptures, and a large collection of ceramic items from around the world.
