A memorial bust of the great Russian poet was originally installed in front of the Shevchenko Drama Theatre, while named in honor of Alexander Pushkin. The project of bust came in honor of Centenary of the great poet, but was realized only 5 years later – in 1904. Another five years later, in 1909, on the other side of the square appeared similar bust of the another writer Nikolai Gogol, after the 1917 revolution, when the Pushkin Drama Theatre had changed its name, busts were reversed. Now Pushkin stands on a more logical place facing the Pushkinska street.
